Music magazine proposal
The pure genre of music that I will use for my magazine will be rock. However, there are many sub-genres of rock such as:
- Punk
- Heavy metal
- Indie
- Death metal
- NU-rock
- Blues-rock
- Alternative rock
- SKA rock
- Garage
- Progressive
- Rock and roll
- Electronic
- Jazz-rock
- Comedy rock
- Gothic rock
- Psychedelic rock Etc.
I can’t use all genres of rock in my magazine so I will focus my magazine on heavy metal. Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in between 1968 and 1974 , largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues-rock and psycheldelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distirsion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo.
The first heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbeth and Deep Purple attracted large audiences, though they were often critically reviled, a status common throughout the history of the genre. In the mid-1970s Judas Preist helped spur the genre's evolution by discarding much of its blues influence; Motorhead introduced a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed. Bands in the new wave of British Heavy Metal such as Iron Maiden followed in a similar vein. Before the end of the decade, heavy metal had attracted a worldwide following of fans known as "Metalheads" or "Headbangers".
There are many different types of media that exists for my genre like radio, TV and magazines. ‘Kerrang’ has a very distinct name brand; the title ‘Kerrang’ is an onomatopoeic that creates the sound of an electric guitar. It is different to others and stands out and I will use this to influence my magazine. I will focus on magazines and ‘Kerrang’ is a well know magazine that is based on a similar genre of music. ‘Kerrang’ has a well-known and big publisher called Bauer.
The Bauer Media Group is a large German publishing company based in Hamburg, which operates in 15 countries worldwide. Since the company was founded in 1875, it has been privately owned and under management by the Bauer family. It was formerly called Heinrich Bauer Verlag KG, abbreviated to HBV and usually shortened to H. Bauer. Worldwide circulation of Bauer Media Group's magazine titles amounts to 38 million magazines a week.

The magazine is aimed at young adults aged around 16-26 years of age. People who are interested in music specifically rock music. Different editions of Kerrang! Have slightly different audiences because sometimes they have bands, which don’t appeal to everyone. Such as someone that is interested in Slipknot may not be interested in Muse.
However all the different editions have something in common. All the images on the from covers of Kerrang! have the bands on the front giving eye contact with the audience by looking out of the page or looking straight at the camera. Kerrang! is a very successful magazine but not only that but it has its own music channel and radio station. This shows how popular Kerrang! have become. They have a total circulation of 44,000 which also backs up that the popularity of the magazine. Also i have noticed by looking at many Kerrang! magazine covers that most of the covers focus on the photo and there isn't many tag lines compared to other magazines. I like the look of the magazine i will use there covers style to influence my magazine. I will make the photo the main focus of my magazine cover. I will many features of there magazine to influence my magazine cover. The Magazine's name is onomatopoeic and refers to the sound made when playing a power chord on an electric guitar. Although i like this idea and it has created a great magazine name but i feel i would be better it i came up with my own unique name. At the moment i have come up with the name 'JAMMED'. I like this name because it infers that it is trapped and controlled which appeals to my target audience.
